Teaching Skate

Having a bright future in the field of roller skating is only conceivable when one has learned all the basics and fundamentals in a systematic way.  One might begin practicing by themselves and be able to maintain their balance to some extent, but performing the movements correctly and flawlessly is another issue.

In addition to balance, skating requires precision and harmony in bodily movements in a way that you intermingle with your skates. This important criterion will not be achieved unless you have pursued the field of skating academically. The Skating Federation has fortunately put a lot of effort in this matter and has held various courses in the field. Moreover, there are educational booklets published by a skating academy which are presented by this organization and cover all small details and tips that are necessary.

The mission of the Skating Academy is to be able to understand and accomplish these topics in a scientific and knowledge-based manner in order to be in line with world-wide standards. That is, when taking part in world-wide competitions, the individuals will not feel like they have been trained in a completely different world. All these updates are carried out by the Skating Federation as the authority of skating in Iran. So do not worry and just look for a reputable skating academy in your city or region.

You can consider the following articles as a valuable source and refer to them in order to check the validity of the training and education you have received. The following articles start teaching you from the most basic skating movements and include all the necessary tips both briefly and in detail. Reading this article is strictly recommended if you want to pursue skating professionally or are planning to be a skating coach.

Specialized fields of skating which include the fields of figure skating, speed skating, hockey skating, freestyle skating and roll ball skating are no exception to this rule and their movements have to be learned in the most precise and adept manner. Specially, due to the existence of various world-wide and nation-wide competitions in the field of specialized skating, being accurate in the principles of training is of utmost importance especially to the trainers.

The management of a skating academy has to be extremely careful in this regard. Being attentive to the work done by the coaches and the staff is one of the requirements of an active management in a skating academy. The term “skating academy” includes all the explanations necessary for skating training, which is teaching and learning skating in a completely scientific way.

The key points in skating training are provided next.

  • Appropriate appearance
  • Punctuality
  • Preparing biography of athletes

  • Manner of Using Safety Devices and Wearing Roller Skate

Respectively:

  1. Hat
  2. Knee supporter
  3. Elbow supporter
  4. Skate
  5. Wrist supporter

  • Manner of Getting up from the Chair after Wearing Devices
  • Feet must be placed parallel. Take the ready position. The body shall take half-raised position forward for transmitting weight.
  • Hands shall be placed on chair beside flanks.
  • Then you can stand up.

  • Basic Standing Position (Ready Position)
  • Apart your legs shoulder width.
  • Your back must be straight and knees are bent.
  • Tolerate your body weight equally with both legs and place them on the central edge. Look forward.
  • Put your hands forward and slightly bend your elbows.

  • V Stance
  • Feet must be placed in V form; heels inward and toes outward.
  • Two back wheels must have distance (back wheels should not be close.)
  • Your back must be straight with bent knees.
  • Tolerate your body weight equally with both legs and place them on the central edge.
  • Look forward.

  • Duck Walk
  • While standing, feet must be placed in V form, in such a way that there is some distance between the two back wheels.
  • Back is straight, knees are bent, both legs shall equally tolerate the body weight and wheels are placed on central edges.
  • Roller skates shall be respectively lifted off the ground and shall be put down on the ground a little further.
  • Feet shall be placed on the ground with all 4 wheels (you should pay attention not to put it down with heel and back wheel).

  • Gliding (Forward)
  • For commencing movement, first take the described initial skating position.
  • For instance, first of all the right foot (free foot) shall be lifted off the ground and body weight shall be transmitted to the left leg which is on the ground.
  • After counting 1, 2, we will put the free foot on the ground. Then, we shall lift the left foot off the ground and body weight shall be transmitted to right foot.
  • By more exercises, we will transmit weight after counting 1, 2, 3, 4. Transmitting weight is very important in this skill.
  • Please pay attention that the whole time you are lifting your free foot off the ground, skating foot shall carry the body weight. When you put skating foot on the ground, you should remember that foot heel (rear wheel) must not be placed on the ground at first.
  • You shall practice between two parallel lines and wheels shall be placed on the central edges.

  • Safe Falling
  • Having safety devices is compulsory, while performing this skill.
  • For safe falling, first decrease your height by bending your knees.
  • Then put your palms, knees and elbows on the ground.
  • If you are rolling fast, you will roll forward on the ground.

* Note: at the time of falling down, head, neck and hand claw must be kept up. Transmit the body weight forward, so that you can prevent falling down from back side.

  • Getting Up from Fall
  • After falling down, at first you should place your two knees on the ground. Put your two palms on the ground. For instance, lift the right knee off the ground and place 4 wheels of right foot on the ground.
  • One hand on the right knee and the other on the ground, push the ground with the hand beside your body, now lift the left knee off the ground.
  • Use ground for getting up. Now both knees are lifted off the ground. In this state, the body shall take the initial position immediately after getting up (bend knees, push weight forward).

* You can also get up off the ground by putting palms of your hands on the ground and closing roller skates to body (in order to use legs as body support).

  • Parallel Rolling (Forward)
  • Roll forward on a straight line, in Ready Position form, feet will be placed next to each other in parallel position.
  • Legs are apart shoulder width.
  • Also hands are apart shoulder width and body weight splits up equally between both feet.
  • Roller skates are placed on central edges.

  • Heel Stop
  • Roll forward on a straight line, feet are paralleled, knees are a bit bent and right foot, which contains the stop, moves forward (performs Scissore)
  • As soon as the right foot’s heel (back stop) meets the left foot’s toe (front wheel), take the break by pressing heel against the ground.
  • In this position, hands are allowed to be placed on knee.
  • The more you put pressure on right foot’s heel, the quicker you stand up.

  • A- Stance
  • Legs are parallel and apart a bit more than shoulder width.
  • Knees can be bent as wide as 2- degrees.

  • Scissor Stance
  • Legs shall be placed parallel and apart your knees shoulder width.
  • Knees are slightly bent.
  • Left and right feet shall move forward and backward same as a scissor.
  • Wheels are on the central edge and hands are opened beside or in front of body.

  • Central Edges
  • (Each wheel has 3 edges: central edge, inside edge and outside edge)
  • In this position, legs are paralleled, knees are slightly bent and back is straight.
  • Legs shall equally tolerate weight.
  • In this position, wheels are on central edge.

  • Inside Edges
  • Legs are paralleled.
  • Knees are slightly bent, back is straight and legs will tolerate weight.
  • Now, slightly close knees together and feel inside edges of wheels.
  • Note: in this movement, knees shall never reach each other.
  • In order to feel the inside edges better, you can take A-stance position.

  • Outside Edges
  • Legs are paralleled.
  • Knees are slightly bent, back is straight and legs will tolerate weight.
  • Now, slightly apart knees from each other and feel outside edges of wheels.

  • Corresponding Edges
  • Legs are paralleled.
  • Knees are slightly bent, back is straight and legs will tolerate weight.
  • When right foot is placed on outside edge, left foot shall be placed on inside edge and vice versa; when right foot is placed on inside edge, left foot shall be placed on outside edge.
  • Similar edges shall be used in performing slalom, crossover and cross back skills.

  • Swizzle (Forward)

At first, observe ready position and then, feet shall swizzle forward or be opened and closed, utilizing knees pushing them.

* Remarks:

  1. Do not lift your feet off the ground.
  2. Using edges are really important while performing.
  3. While performing this skill and at the time of gliding forward, skater shall form 7, 8 and 11 with his/her roller skates.
  4. Please be careful with your knees while performing swizzle movement, knees must not be bent or opened and we shall not have body height change.

  • Regaining Balance
  • In case skater loses his/her balance during gliding, he/she must immediately bring hands forward and decrease body height (mostly by bending knees). The skater will touch his/her roller skate.
  • In other word, the skater must retake ready position.

  • Parallel Rolling (Backward)
  • Feet are paralleled and knees are a bit bent, back shall be straightened and you shall lean your weight forward.
  • Push yourself backward utilizing the rod.
  • Look the back route up to the field’s center through over the right shoulder. Please pay attention to look the back route through over the left shoulder, when you arrived the field’s center.

(Field condition and moving direction determines the looking direction backward.)

  • You shall not bend forward from back.

  • Gliding (Backward)
  • Perform the correct initial position (Feet are paralleled and knees are a bit bent, back shall be straightened) in the beginning.
  • Then incline toes toward each other, and in this position, pressure is on toes.
  • Move backward by changing feet consecutively while transmitting weight.

Note:

Stepping consecutively on both feet shall be accomplished regarding correct weight transmission and you have to look backward inevitably.

  • Swizzle (Backward)
  • Regard the correct initial position (ready position), then toes shall incline toward each other (they get closer to each other).
  • The entire actions shall be performed forward on the contrary to the swizzle (Forward) skill.

Note: There is an emphasis in performing the skill utilizing the edges and also looking backward.

  • One Leg Balance (Right/ Left)
  • For performing this skill in movement, first glide forward and take the initial position.
  • For keeping balance, hands shall be opened beside body.
  • Transmit entire body weight on left leg and then lift up right foot off the ground from the left foot side.
  • Sole shall stand the whole body weight.
  • Repeat the mentioned stages for the left leg balance.

Remarks:

  • While performing this skill, using central edge of wheels are compulsory.
  • Four wheels of skate shall equally tolerate body weight.
  • Foot shall be lifted off the ground up to skate level which is on the ground.
  • The trainee can keep moving on one leg, based on the obtained balance skill.

One leg balance

  • Cross Over (Right to Left)
  • For performing this skill, stand on a circle, feet must be parallel.
  • In this position, wheels shall be placed on the edge (left foot; outside edge) and right foot shall cross left foot and will be placed beside left foot on inside edge.
  • At the time of placing right foot on the ground, you can incline toe of right foot inward the circle center.
  • Hands have been placed in a position that resembles embracing the circle, in a way that the right hand is in front and the left hand is in back.
  • For performing the skill easily, you should look alongside the moving path.

Note:

  • At the time of primary training of the skill, you should initiate training from right to left or counter clockwise.
  • At the time of performance, the roller skates are not colliding at all.
  • Performing the Scissore level helps right foot to cross over the tip of left foot.
  • Notice that: the right foot shall never cross over the left foot’s roller skate for performing the Scissore level.

  • Cross Over (Left to Right)

Performing levels of left foot cross over are same as the above levels, but the only difference is that the edges and feet direction shall be reversed.

  • Up Kerbs
  • First, observe the initial position and stay beside kerb.
  • The foot which is closed to the kerb shall be placed on the kerb at first and then the second foot shall be placed on the kerb with distance.
  • Please be careful to transmit weight simultaneously after putting foot on the kerb.

  • Over Twigs
  • Commence this skill by gliding forward on a straight line.
  • Take the correct initial position and when you approach obstacle, transmit weight on the left leg and lift right leg off the ground and put it on the other side of the obstacle.
  • Then transmit weight on right leg and lift left leg off the ground and put it down beside the right leg.

Attention; legs must not be put on the ground by heel at first.

  • Sit (for Fun)

Training the skill in static position

  • Stand beside the rod observing the initial position, the left foot shall be placed on the fore wheel.
  • Then lower your height and sit on left foot.
  • Notice that left foot is deemed as the seat. In this position, your back shall be straightened.
  • Your weight is on the left foot and the knees are placed next to each other (Weight shall be splited 50-50 on both feet).

Training the skill in dynamic position

  • Initiate performing the skill while moving by rolling forward.
  • Feet are in a parallel position. Hands have been opened across the body and or you can place the hands on the base foot.
  • Then place the left foot on the fore wheel and sit on the left foot by lowering the body’s height getting help from bending knees more.
  • At the time of sitting, place the hands on the right knee and stand up quickly.

  • Stroking and Gliding (Forward)

Correct performance of this skill depends on weight transmission

  • Imagine a straight line and lift up your right foot off the ground.
  • Transmit your weight completely on the left foot and count from 1 to 3.
  • Now place your right foot beside the left one through backside.
  • Notice that to lift up your left foot off the ground and after counting to three place it next to right foot through backside, when right foot’s heel met left foot’s toe. Right foot will repeat the performance again.

Notice that the most important factor in performing this skill is to transmit the weight correctly.

Stroking and Gliding

  • A-Frame Turn (Right to Left) and (Left to Right)
  • At the initiation of gliding forward on a straight line, for turning left, legs shall be opened and be placed on the inside edge (in A-Stance frame)
  • Knees have been bent for two degrees and the pressure is more on the entire right foot.
  • The whole body remains steady and the upper body spins constantly with the foot.
  • From the beginning of gliding to the spinning and after that continuing the path, U- frame or horseshoe frame shall be made.
  • Turning right side is on the contrary to the above items.

This move will be performed in order to turn

  • Spin Stop
  • In this skill, the full concentration stays with the right foot’s heel and the left foot’s toe (on counterclockwise).
  • The body weight is splited between two legs and the wheels of both skates are on the inside edge.
  • Both knees have been bent and the full stop occurs while spinning. Spinning is only as much as 180 degrees (almost a half turn) and spinning more than that is a fault.
  • A-Stance frame occurs at the end of movement.

  • Parallel Turn
  • The left foot is in front of the right foot in gliding forward on a straight line, when you want to turn left (Scissore).
  • Weight shall be inclined toward heel which causes freeing toe, and as a result, the spinning act would be easier.
  • Both knees have been bent. Hands, upper body and head shall turn at the same time with feet. The wheels’ edges are in corresponding edge form.
  • Use hands and upper body for spinning. You would ease the act of spinning while doing it, by using hands and upper body.
  • Turning right side is on the contrary to the above items.

Note: Your toe shall not be lifted off the ground while spinning.

Parallel Turn

  • T-Stop (Forward)

Commence performing this skill by gliding forward on a straight line.

  • While standing: feet must be placed parallel, then bend your knees and move right foot backward.
  • Right foot shall rotate on front wheel and will be placed behind left foot in T form, in this position, knee of front foot will be bent and left foot (front foot) shall tolerate weight.
  • Consider that, while performing T-stop skill, the body must not turn to the right side and pelvis must not be opened.
  • For avoiding rotation of the body to the right side:
  • Extend your hands in front of your face or put them on knees.
  • Right foot shall be placed on inside edge and put pressure on the ground till you completely stop.

  • Backward T-Stop
  • Stand by the rod and push yourself backward. In this position, your knees shall be bent and your back shall be straightened.
  • The point is that the body weight does not transmit to the rear foot.
  • Your right foot shall draw a half circle backward, alongside the left foot and your weight stays with the front (left) foot. Front foot’s knee is still bent.
  • Observing the mentioned notices is mandatory in moving forward.
  • Notice that the free foot shall not go upper than the skate leggings.

  • Backwards Crossover (Right to Left)
  • Push yourself backward. Take the initial position.
  • Feet are formed backward in a parallel position. Then they shall be placed backward in Scissore form.
  • In this form, pull the left foot backward on the inside edge through right foot’s tip (form a cross by your feet).
  • Then lift up the right foot and place it next to the left foot (in initial position), while transmitting your weight to the left foot, and repeat performing the movement around the circle in the following steps of initiation (weight transmission shall be accomplished consecutively).
  • Hands shall be open in a way that resembles embracing the circle. Your look shall be inevitably on the moving path and backward.
  • At the end, perform the movement around the circle observing the similar edges (right foot on the outside edge- left foot on the inside edge).
  • Notice that knees are bent and back is straightened.

Backwards Crossover

  • Backwards Crossover (Left to Right)

Performing the skill will be accomplished same as the above items, but the difference is that the performing direction is on the contrary side.

In order not to make mistake in directions and feet, notice that the foot which is close to the circle shall always move backward.

  • Slalom

Start the movement by gliding forward and on a straight line.

  • By observing “Ready Position”, feet are paralleled and the body weight is located on the heel.
  • Free the toes and start spinning to the right and left on both sides of a straight line.
  • Notice that the wheels have similar edges while performing the skill.

Slalom

  • Simple Jump

It has three levels: preparing- taking off- returning to the initial position with bent knee

Glide forward and take the correct initial position.

  • Feet are paralleled and knees are completely bent in this position and hands are placed on the sides.
  • Hands should stroke forward from the back side form, while taking off the ground.
  • While taking off, the last parts which lift up off the ground are toes, and while landing, the first parts which hit the ground are toes.
  • You shall close hands in the air and open them while landing, and knees are bent.
  • Notice that not to forget utilizing the bouncy property of knees in performing this skill.

Simple Jump

  • Backward Stroking and Gliding

Initiate performing the skill by gliding backward on a straight line.

  • Then you should push and stroke your feet to the sides and finally feet shall be closed in the center. Weight transmission is very important in performance.
  • The entire performing levels in moving forward shall also be regarded in moving backward.
  • There are inside roller skate edges in backward performance of this movement (it should be stroked forward and on inside edges in 45-degree angle).
  • Also you shall look backward on route’s direction.

  • Toe and Heel transition

Getting up on toe = Rotating backward

Getting up on heel = Rotating forward

Transition from front side to back side: You should glide forward on a straight line, your feet shall be paralleled, left foot shall be in front, left hand is in front and the right hand stays alongside the body. Sit on your knees, in this position, get on the first wheel (toe) and operate back and feet backward spinning on primary wheels. Finally, transition will be accomplished from front side to back side.

Transition from back side to front side: You should glide backward on a straight line, your feet shall be paralleled, right foot shall move back, right hand is in front and the left hand stays alongside the body. Sit on your knees, get on the last wheel (heel) and operate back and wheels forward spinning. Finally, transition will be accomplished from back side to front side.

In transitions, Scissore shall be operated prior to the performance.

In order to perform Scissore, hands and feet shall be on the same direction.

Notice: Positioning form of hands and feet depends on the spinning direction.

41- Eagle Turn

  • Stand by the rods, on the forward direction, make your feet parallel, place your left hand beside the rod, and take the rod.
  • Move your right foot forward and then open your left foot as wide as 180-degree and place it next to the right foot. In this position, toes (front wheels) are opened wide as 180-degree.
  • Transmit your weight to the left foot and lift up your right foot and place it next to the left foot in parallel position and transit direction from front side to back side.
  • Perform this skill while moving on a straight line and transit direction from front side to back side.

Notice that feet have to be lifted up off the ground in this movement.

Transition from back side to front side: The skill shall be performed contrary to the above explanations.
